Biographical

Alan M. Kanter is a a neutral ADR provider (i.e., an arbitrator, mediator, facilitator and case evaluator) and a lawyer practicing in many different areas of law. In addition, Alan is an educator, teaching ADR to practicing attorneys, state court judges and law students; a consultant and an author, focusing primarily on the field of mediation and arbitration.

Alan engages in a significant amount of ADR work for the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and has been an arbitrator from the early 1980's to the present. He is currently AAA-certified as an active mediator and arbitrator panelist on the regular and large complex Commercial, Employment Law, Health Law, Securities and Franchise Panels of the AAA, formerly, a neutral panelist for the National Arbitration Forum, an Arbitrator and Mediator for the American Health Lawyers Association, United States Arbitration & Mediation Association, Mediation Works Incorporated (MWI), National Center for Dispute Resolution and Resolute Solutions, LLC. He is also Court certified to mediate and arbitrate in the Courts in the State of Michigan. Alan has been a case evaluator for the Oakland County Circuit Court since 1984, and participated in the creation of the Oakland County Circuit Court Early Case Evaluation Program. He regularly serves as a neutral throughout the United States, on Large Complex Disputed Matters.

Education

Alan attended Wayne State University where, in 1976, he earned a BA with High Distinction in the field of History, and was awarded membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity, which emphasizes excellence in the field of liberal arts. He continued his post graduate education by attending law school at the Wayne State University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor Degree in 1979. He has been a student of and taught for the American Arbitration Association for over 25 years. He has been a regular lecturer for The University of Michigan's Institute for Continuing Legal Education in the fields of arbitration and mediation for over 10 years. A participant in many education symposiums sponsored by the International Academy of Mediators,  has also participated in post graduate classes in the field of ADR at the Pepperdine University School of Law, Strauss Center for Dispute Resolution, and the PON program at the Harvard University School of Law.


Memberships & Affiliations

Alan has been a member of the American Bar Association, sections, committees and sub-committees from 1979 to the present,  He has been a member of the American Bar Associations Franchise Forum and ADR Sections since inception, as well as a member of the Litigation, Health Care Law, and Labor and Employment and Business Law Sections. He is a member and ADR Neutral provider of the American Health Lawyers Association He has been an active and supporting member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Oakland County Bar Association, has served upon and has been elected chairperson of numerous sections/committees of that organization. In the year 2000, he was invited to become a member of the International Academy of Mediators and was elevated to the position of Distinguished Fellow of that organization in the year of 2005.  He was 1 of 5 Michigan attorneys elected as a Charter Member/Fellow of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, and is currently is a voting member of the NADN admission committee for the State of Michigan.  As a member of the State Bar of Michigan, he has been an active member of many State Bar Sections, Section Councils, a two term member of the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly. In 2005-2006, he served as the Chairperson of the State Bar of Michigan's Alternative Dispute Resolution Section Council.  He is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a life member of the Fellows of the State of Michigan Bar Foundation.  He has been selected as 2019 Lawyer of the Year - Arbitration by Best Lawyers in America and has received received numerous and continuing recognitions of the highest nature from long recognized and well established peer based third party assessment/ quality rating organications with ratings based upon actual peer attorney and judicial selection such as one of the Best Lawyers in America from 2005 to the present, and Best Lawyers in Detroit for 2012 and 2013; has been included and recognized with the highest ratings (AV-Preeminent) in the Martindate Hubbell authoritative attorney, law firm, judicial rating systemfor more than 30 years with the very highest ratings, Super Lawyers in Michigan from 2008 to the present, reviewed in numerous Marquis' Whose Who publication, including, "Who's Who in American Law",  "Who's Who in America"  at least 25 times in the last 35 years and was awarded it highest Honor, the Albert Neilson Lifetime Achievement Award for 2017 and 2018. Beginning in 2007 and continuing through the present, Alan has been selected as one of the Best Lawyers in the Metropolitan Detroit Area by Hour (dbusiness) Magazine, and beginning in 2008 through the present, Alan was selected to be included in the Super Lawyers of Michigan Publication. Beginning in 2009 through the present, Alan was selected as a Top Lawyer in the Metropolitan Detroit Area by Crain's Detroit Business Magazine.  Alan has maintained the highest rating as an attorney "AV" Preeminent, based upon peer review conducted by Martindale-Hubbell for 25 consecutive years. He has regularly been included in "Top Lawyers in Michigan" by The New York Times and The American Lawyer publications.  In May 2015, Alan was elected as a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, and is the first and only member of the State Bar of Michigan to receive that Honor.  Alan was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the College of Commercial Arbitrators in April, 2019. He has been similarly recognized by more recognitions, from new, (or newer national organizations) which began to review and rate Michigan lawyers within the very recent past, including, but not limited to Leading Lawyers Organization, Lawyers of Distinction, and numerous International Arbitration and Mediation membership or recognition organizations. Alan's law firm was recognized as the Best Employment Lawyers in Detroit by Expertise.


Rates Information

Arbitration and Mediation $495/hour, $4,950.00/day. Applies to study time, communications and all related work. Rates for proceedings scheduled to last one (1) week or more are negotiable. Travel time, billed at 2/3 regular hourly rate. Reimbursement for all reasonable and necessary costs and expenses. Cancellation Fees apply where 14 or fewer days advance notice; and unless otherwise specifically agreed in writing, the full daily rate for all scheduled or reserved days whether canceled, adjourned, by reason of 11th hour settlement;  where a scheduled proceeding is not completed within the times and dates scheduled, or for any other reason  for a schedul event does not take place when scheduled.
